My internship with Kombucha Town over these past five months has validated my passion for sustainable business. I have been excited throughout my entire time with this growing company. Being a team member of a business on the cusp of a booming industry is rewarding and also challenging. These are two conditions I learned create an exciting environment I greatly enjoy being a part of. I am grateful for Kombucha Town sharing the same level of excitement for sustainability and aligning with similar core values as myself.

Throughout this internship, I have developed better professional communication skills by being in constant contact with my supervisor Josh. He provided me with explicit knowledge about our product that I studied prior to working events; however, he left room for tacit knowledge, what I learned by experience from simply interacting with the public. I developed immense product knowledge that ranged from why we are the only kombucha company that chooses to can kombucha to understanding the health benefits of drinking it. Josh let me develop my own style of communicating our brand and I ultimately found a voice that resonated with many consumers.

I learned the importance of always coming prepared to meetings and events from various experiences throughout my internship. For example, prior to meeting with Sustainable Connections, I studied their website and built upon my preexisting knowledge of what they do as an organization. I found that I was able to contribute more insightful comments throughout the meeting because I had done my research. This experience taught me the importance of coming prepared to meetings and events, as it has a great effect on one’s overall credibility. I want to best represent myself and the company I am a member of with every interaction I make.
One of my most personal insights brought upon by this internship is learning that sharing my knowledge of greening business practices is a unique and important asset but that I need to continue building on my skill set in the field of business. For example, my experiences of beginning the process of certifications, such as B Corporation Certification, has led me to the understanding that it is extremely beneficial to stay organized from the beginning of a company’s inception, as it can be challenging to harness and document all positive actions performed by a growing company. This internship serves as the catalyst of me seeking more knowledge on specific skills such as sustainability reporting, a skill I am excited by and plan to learn as I have witnessed it's relevancy with Kombucha Town.
I have also learned the importance of companies staying grounded in and highly reminded of their core values because it helps shape the culture of the business. I believe a work environment can only benefit by this constant connection among every member of the team feeling inspired and motivated by the overall mission of a company and at Kombucha Town this is present.
I have developed positive relationships with the Kombucha Town team and greatly look forward to staying in contact for future projects.
